Do you want to spend a few days this summer doing something different that is not a big investment? I am offering 4 dyeing courses this summer, starting in mid July and carrying on until the end of September. I have taken a lot of training and decided it is time to share the information that I have learned over the years with others.
You do not need a lot of physical strength to dye fabric. Nor do you need to be scientifically oriented as I have simplified the process for you.
If you wish to reserve a spot please contact me at Dyeing2helpyou@gmail.com (Texts are fine) or call me at either (250) 421-3594 or (250) 426-6110 and leave a message.
I will be providing you with the highest quality materials so that you will be proud of your work. I dye exclusively on Japanese 100% cotton lawn (220 thread count) which will give you the very best results.
I have kept the cost of these courses very low and have compressed them into just what you need to know so that they are more fun. As a benefit of taking this course I offer this fabric to students at a $2.00/metre discount for a month following the course. (Normal cost is $10.00/metre by the yard). I will also be developing very interesting dyes over the summer - stay posted.
I know it's summer and we all want to be outside. I am offering these courses, when taught in Cranbrook, on my deck under market umbrellas. We have fed blue jays all winter and I think the chances of seeing them come to feed is pretty high. If it rains we can still carry on, with heaters - just dress appropriately. Don't wear your best clothes or else wear an apron. Also flat shoes are desirable.
Wouldn't this be a fun way to celebrate a teen or adult birthday party? Anyone can do it! Guys would enjoy these courses as well.
I'm willing to travel to fibre or quilting guilds to teach these processes. (One of the benefits of retirement).
I'm guessing on the end time of the courses. I will fine tune that as time goes on. Partly it will depend on the experience of the class.
Ice Dyeing 101(Tuesdays) 9:00-3:00
Course cost $25.00
Materials kit $30.00
In this course we will explore all of the variables that affect the results of ice dyeing. Students will learn in a few hours what has taken me a long time to learn through trial and error. Students will be empowered to produce the most amazing pieces of art after taking this course. This technique gives you a big bang for the effort. It is the foundation course for further ice dyeing techniques such as "Tiptoe through the tulips" which will be taught on Wednesdays. A discussion session will follow where we consolidate what we learned. Everyone will have a good set of actual examples of how changing the variables affects dyeing, to take home.
The supplies kit includes 2 metres of fine Japanese fabric, safety equipment, all the dyes and supplies needed, a printout of what we learned and a reference sheet of important information for all forms of dyeing. You will leave with examples of all the results of changing the variables of ice dyeing...useful and also a good record for future dyeing efforts.
Hope to see you there.... Here is a sample of ice dyeing. We will also be discussing snow dyeing.
Tiptoe Through the Tulips (Wednesday) 9:00-3:00
Course cost: $25.00
Materials cost: $30.00
This course results in you having both the front and back of a 45" square wholecloth quilt. For those of you who aren't quilters, what you will be producing are 2 beautiful pieces of dyed art suitable for framing, one which is the inside of a tulip and 1 which is the outside of a tulip. Quilters will likely quilt these together to produce a reversible quilt but others can hang them separately.
Come with an idea of what colours you want your tulip to be.
The materials kit includes 2 metres of fine Japanese fabric, safety equipment, all the dyes and supplies needed and a reference sheet of important information for all forms of dyeing. Packages of silk cacoons will be available for sale if you wish to dye simultaneously for the stamens at my cost ($1.00 per cacoon). The front and back wholecloth pieces normally sell for $75.00 so you can see I'm paying you to take this course. Call it sweat equity.
Here is an example of the front of a tulip. Stitching will take this art to the moon and back! That will also be discussed in the class...
Parfait Dyeing (Thursday) 9:00-3:00
Course cost: $25.00
This course is about layering pieces of fabric dyed with different colours on top of each other and letting the colours mingle from piece to piece.
We will cover a variety of manipulation techniques and compare the results.
You will be provided with a variety of recipes for colours I have chosen and will be taught how to create your own recipes. A colour chart will be provided to assist in that process.
A reference sheet will be provided with general information about dyeing.
You will leave with 6 pieces of fabric, which currently sell for $8.00 each. (This is an old sample)
That's like getting the training for $7.00!
Overdyeing Course (Friday-Saturday) 9:00-3:00 each day
Course cost $40.00
Materials cost $30.00
Overdyeing is typically done to correct the colour of something that you don't like. However in this course we will be introducing different ratios of two selected colours to our beautiful Japanese lawn fabric over a period of 2 days to produce an explosion of 15 coordinated colours. Talk about harmony for your artform. The resulting fabrics will include light, medium and dark values of gorgeous colours. It is very hard to find this in commercially dyed collections.
This course is the one to take if you want to know general information that applies to all types of dyeing. You will learn how to create your own custom dye solutions and will be introduced to some of the math behind dyeing. It is very manageable though.
The supplies kit includes 2 metres of fine Japanese fabric, safety equipment, all the dyes and supplies needed, a colour reference guide for dyeing formulae and a reference sheet of important information for all forms of dyeing.
Come to this course with an idea of 2 colours that you'd like to use in your artwork.
Here are some examples of coordinated colours which were dyed this way.
Come and spend a few days under the trees learning something entirely fun and very useful. Satisfaction is definitely guaranteed in each of these courses.
What these courses do for you is allow you to become fabric designers!! You will be able to produce your own fabric at a fraction of the cost. It will also be of a higher quality. Hope to see you soon.
Courses run from mid July to the end of September.
